Get Me to the Church on Time (part 1)
This date loomed before us with happiness and part dread. We had to be 800 plus miles to Wisconsin from Maryland overnight and back the next day to get the children back to Maryland, 800 plus miles more, in time for the vans leaving for camp. When it was planned out months ago, it seemed like a total impossiblity. Yet, it had to be done. Made worse by not having any sleep two nights prior to heading … Read entire article »

Do Narcissists REALLY Love Themselves?
I suppose a rather different blog for me, but its a subject I am studying…. Voicelessness: Narcissism by Richard Grossman, Ph.D. Many people spend a lifetime aggressively trying to protect an injured or vulnerable “self.” Traditionally, psychologists have termed such people “narcissists,” but this is a misnomer. To the outside world it appears that these people love themselves. Yet, at their root they don’t love themselves–in fact their self barely exists–and what part does exist is deemed worthless. All energy is devoted to inflating the self, like a persistent child trying to blow up a balloon with a hole. Because they need continuous proof of the significance of their voice, narcissists must find people, particularly important people, to hear and value them. If they are not heard, their childhood wound opens, and they quickly begin to melt away like the Wicked Witch of … Read entire article »

Miss Catherine
Miss Catherine is an amazing, determined, and charming lady. When I say determined, its with a capital “D”. Miss Catherine, a neighbor, and someone I rarely spoke to, approached me one day, asking if I would become her book editor. She was only armed with the knowledge that I homeschooled my children and had a working knowledge of computers. While I tried to convince her that I was hardly qualified and my time was limited, she wouldn’t take no for an answer. She had the most magnetizing way of not listening to my reasons for trying to turn her down , so I found myself telling her that I would give editing her book a try. I thought it would be a few months project, but it ended up being over a year. I was … Read entire article »

Caution: MP3’s can ruin your hearing
A subject close to my heart is that of hearing loss. At a very young age, due to a very bad case of the measles having gone to my ears, I lost a great deal of my hearing. I was 90% deaf in the left ear, and over 50% in the right. Needless to say, not being able to understand at a young age that I was missing sounds, I resorted to lip reading what people were telling me. When it became evident to my parents, that I wasn’t practicing what some children do, that of “selective hearing” but actually I wasn’t hearing things, they sought immediate medical attention. My mom stopping at nothing to get me seen and operated on by the very best. The very busy doctor who wasn’t … Read entire article »

Sodom and Gomorrah
I believe it was Evangelist Billy Graham who used to say in his televised sermons my mom would turn on years ago, “If the Lord doesn’t return soon, he will soon have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” He was of course speaking of how evil the world was becoming, and saying the rapture must come soon. I remember thinking it was a rather presumptuous thing for him to say. I learned early on the Bible says God alone decides these things. I haven’t thought about that statement much, but two stories in the news reminded me of his quote. World Net Daily reports two rather shocking stories, one regarding babies and children, and another about the unborn: It seems Child-rape is an epidemic in South Africa, the numbers reported are rapes and attempted rapes … Read entire article »

Strange but True
I warned readers to my blog when I started that I fancy the odd news story now and again. Here’s one: GONE LAKE VILLAGERS in Russia were baffled when their lake had disappeared overnight. Fisherman in Bolotnikovo woke up to find a giant muddy hole where the water was. Experts believe the lake in the Nizhegorodskaya region east of Moscow may have been sucked into an underground cave system. Emergencies official Dmitry Zaitsev said: ‘It is very dangerous. If a person had been in this disaster he would have had almost no chance of survival. ‘The trees flew downwards under the ground.’ But some local suspect dirty tricks – one old woman said: ‘I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us’ … Read entire article »

Planetary Sightseeing
Every once in awhile I find an interesting link to share. This is a blog called Sprol, where you can visit some of the worst places in the world via satellite. Their mission is to show the visual macroscopic effects of our decisions and behavior. The latest entry is about the harvesting and poisoning of Tasmanian forests disrupting is delicate ecosystem. After that, the next entry is regarding America’s high rate of imprisonment. Have a look at this blog: “Sprol is the dark side of Google Sightseeing” Never the less, perhaps its something we should be looking at…. Sprol … Read entire article »

What about the children?
Not guilty was the verdict. It really didn’t come as any surprise. However I wasn’t very consoled with the justice system. I realize the parents of the children need their heads examined. I realize Michael Jackson shouldn’t be sleeping with children, or around any for that matter. In the end, what was the justice for the children past, present, and future? For once can it not be about the celebrities and the lawyers, and the money, and can’t it be just about the children? … Read entire article »

Attitude
One show that one of my children seems to turn on each day is a family show called “7th Heaven.” I never have watched it closely, but it seems to be about a minister and his wife and their 7 children. Often I am just very busy and never actually SEE the show, but I can hear things said from time to time. Recently, I had to chuckle when the father was very annoyed with one of his children and the line was spoke to him, “Change your attitude to gratitude!” I just loved that line! I thought, ‘gee, I can’t wait to use that, that’s a great line!’ Well, I won’t mention any names, but I didn’t have to wait long to use it on one of my children! Gratitude….is that … Read entire article »

Go Ask Alice, Rainbow Parties, and Socialization
If you are about my age, you might remember the book, “Go Ask Alice”. There was a movie that followed it, and of course there is always the line in Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” with Grace Slick vocalizing “Go Ask Alice” I am not sure what the intention of the book was, but I always had the feeling it was supposed to teach us young people to stay away from drugs. After all, “Alice” was … Read entire article »

Why are frogs so noisy?
The other night, we had a violent storm roar in, bringing with it pounding rains, loud, earth shaking clapping thunder, and constant flashes of lightning….and something else…something noisy coming from the pool area. Laura was the first to notice it. She tried to get my attention. I wasn’t very quick to respond. The storm had been conjured up from the hot and humid conditions of the day, and it had taken all my energy. I wasn’t … Read entire article »

Are American High Schools Obsolete?
The day I graduated High School was one of the happiest days of my life. I went to a school where we had a million dollar gymnasium, and not one book in the entire library. It wasn’t hard to see what the focus of that school was: SPORTS. Oh sure, academics were important too, but they bowed to the ‘jocks’. (The term for beer drinking, rowdy, atheletes at our school) The other group were the ‘heads’. They were the pot smoking, deep, and sedate hippy like bunch, that were of course frowned upon by the jocks, naturally. The last group were the poor souls that didn’t fall into either of these groups. Usually the ones that did all their homework, excelled in their classes, and ran for class president. The pressure was amazing no … Read entire article »

Post Modernism
Yesterday’s church started a new quarter, and with it 3 choices for Sunday School classes to attend: A “cranial” study of Romans Jeremiah and Lamentations or Post Modernism. (Its mainly for the youth, and the parents were invited for a one time sit in). With only a vague idea of what could be meant on Post Modernism, I opted to attend that one, curious. Seems my vague ideas were on the right track, yet even for the teacher the definition wasn’t just flowing off his tongue. A very basic definition could be as follows… “[Post Modernism]……is the belief that direction, evolution and progression have ended in social history, and society is based instead upon the decline of absolute truths, and the rise of relativity……” The discussion seems to be centered as to how this way of thinking has … Read entire article »

Too White?
Can’t we even have a charity event without discourse? Just yesterday I blogged on the news story regarding Live8, the 2005 answer to 1985’s Live Aid. Today’s news shows problems before it even begins. Anarchist groups plan takeover of Geldof’s march as DJ attacks Live8 line-up as ‘too white’ I just thought those that wanted to participate could… … Read entire article »
