Hillary on the War

With the only accurate possible way to go, Hillary had to look at her voting record and reply honestly, defending her Iraq War Vote. Or was it honest?
“I take responsibility for my vote, and I, along with a majority of Americans, expect the president and his administration to take responsibility for the false assurances, faulty evidence and mismanagement of the war,” the New York senator said in a lengthy letter to thousands of people who have written her about the war.
At the same time, she said the United States must “finish what it started” in Iraq.
Brave words amongst what seems to be growing anti-war sentiments, and Bush’s disapproval ratings climbing.
My only question is, that Congress was available to see all the same ‘evidences’ that Bush saw, and they in a majority voted to go into Iraq. Is Bush the only responsible party?
What do you think?

Quite the “Hot” topic you’ve got going here Barb. I believe there were underlying
reasons why went went into Iraq. Bush laid down the premise of WMD’s, terrorist
threats, etc… which I view as an “excuse” to wage the war. I think the real
reason we went in was the “Big Picture”. To drive a wedge of “Shining Democracy”
right into the heart of the Middle East. Successfully doing so would destabilize
all those nasty dictatorship countries that have been the terrorist breeding grounds.
Second, I think the administration knew the terrorist would flock into Iraq in an
attempt to “Repel The Infidels” and thus take the fight to the enemy. (we would rather
have them fighting our professional soldiers than killing civilians in our cities)
Now as to your question about who is responsible… I do think that given the current
“terrorist” climate at the time, not voting to go with the Commander in Chief many
Congressmen/Women would have viewed as political suicide. Now that the climate has
changed, in typical politician style, many are backpeddling as fast as they can. Did
you expect anything different?
As to whether or not this “Big Picture” theory of mine will be successful in Iraq, only
time will tell. Of course I could be totally off base and Bush just wanted to go
in and finish what daddy couldn’t at the cost of thousands of American lives. Either way, I’m a bit discusted by it all.
No, of course Bush isn’t the only responsible party. People talk like it’s just Bush sitting in a room making all the decisions, pushing all the buttons. Bush is the President, but he has a panel of people that regularly make decisions for him. There’s no way one person can do everything. Granted, he is the person at the top who is responsible for his subordinates, but still.
Bush is not the only person who wanted to go to war. Many others agreed with him. If information was flawed, well then shucks. That happens. Is it unfortunate? Yes. Is it the end of the world? No. I like how Hillary manages to include a statement of blame with her statement of responsibility. “um… yeah… I voted for it, but… um… HE LIED TO ME!”
Tiger, you make an interesting point. I do think especially around the world
there is a misconception on how much power our president actually has.
I think they base that on their own forms of governments, and really don’t know
a lot about the structure of ours.
