Government vs Google

War on Terrorism, War on Drugs…now the War on Child Porn. The fight against it seems to have one thread in common, the government wants us to give up our privacy in order to fight them. While trying to fight porn, all of the other search engines have complied with the government, giving over millions of search results in doing their part of the Bush administration’s appeal regarding the Child Online Protection Act. Google has not.

  1. I really applaud Google for standing up for the privacy of their visitors.
However, I have nothing to hide in terms of search keywords or sites I have visited.
I would think that most parents are wondering why Google couldn’t at least turn
over certain data that helps to protect children from these vile people of society.
It seems only a matter of time before more policing of the internet happens than is
    already happening.

Another twist to this is that Google wants to get into the market in China. There are over 100 million web surfers there and that country is widely regarded as the “Internet Gold Mine” of the next decade. The problem is that in order to do so, Google has caved to the edict of the Communist Government to actually CENSOR the content of searches to make sure the people of China don’t see anything their government doesn’t want them to. **Cough** Tiananmen Square **Cough**

Although I do appreciate my freedoms & privacy being protected, I find it strange that Google is willing to fight the “Man” here home, but quickly caves in at the prospect of 100 million new customers!

Money talks, and 100 million new customors would seem to ‘talk’ to just
    about anyone.

But you are right NightOwl, there is a definate lack of consistancy here.
