We still had Petra with us in the winter of 1977, and Maryland treated her with both extremes on the weather. Summer she arrived in sweltering heat and the winter, was the worse I can remember at that time. Our huge Chesapeake Bay froze over entirely, and people were actually driving cars over the bay. That’s cold!

So we had romps in the snow, ice-skating on the creeks, and one long skate to Gibson Island. We had the Sweetheart dance, Dutch lessons, Dice games at the kitchen table, I got to go to New York City on an AFS exchange, I got in my first car accident (boy the Japanese flew that night – poor Masahiro), later that year, I had another car accident, (and that night the portuguese filled the sounds of the car - poor Flavio).  Adriana had a very wild surprise farewell party, I wish I could remember it. Petra graduated from Northeast High School, and later at Chesapeake we had the Ring Dance, the Harvest Ball, Flavio adopted me as his host sister, and Chrissie won 2nd runner up at the Pasadena Jaycees Beauty Pageant.  

Most memorable is Petra and I saying goodbye and several adults having to pry us apart. We never want to say goodbye, it’s too hard.
