Al Gore: Practice what you preach
Just days after winning an Oscar for his movie, “Inconvenient Truth,” a local non-profit organization is claiming that Al Gore’s own home “emblematic of what it deems Gore’s environmental hypocrisy.”
Holding Gore’s utility bills for the past two years, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research charged Monday that the gas and electric bills for the former vice president’s 20-room home and pool house devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, more than 20 times the national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours.
“If this were any other person with $30,000-a-year in utility bills, I wouldn’t care,” says the Center’s 27-year-old president, Drew Johnson. “But he tells other people how to live and he’s not following his own rules.”
Even though Tipper and Gore have installed solar panels, and have taken some efficiency measures, Johnson is not impressed.
”I appreciate the solar panels,” he said, “but he also has natural gas lanterns in his yard, a heated pool, and an electric gate. While I appreciate that he’s switching out some light bulbs, he is not living the lifestyle that he advocates.”
While we speak of his home, this is actually only just one of his homes. No need to even mention here about how he takes private jets all over the world while he preaches against the rest of us driving anything other than a bike or green car.
I think the Oscars are going to force more than a few celebrity environmentalists into accountability, which is a good thing.

What the media outlets aren’t reporting quite as quickly are that Gore is voluntarily participating in the Kyoto agreements… which the US pulled out of. The idea is that there’s a cap set on the number of tons of CO2 that a business or household can produce. If you are unwilling or unable to keep your emissions below that threshold, you can purchase extra “carbon credits” from someone who isn’t hitting their cap. Gore is doing just this — meaning his usage is balanced out by someone else.
If you’re interested in learning what exactly is going on… there’s a good article on Newsvine about it, titled Al Gore’s Electric Bill, Carbon Credits, and A Lesson In Economics. Now, I’m no Gore supporter, but I think it’s only fair that people know the whole truth instead of just what the media is choosing to report.
Oh PLEASE! Whole Truth indeed.
The mainstream media LOVES Al Gore. Hollywood loves Al Gore.
The point is, since he is PREACHING this, he should be exemplary, not needing to buy credits.
There are other celebrities who are very conservative in their lifestyles and who are actually prime examples of how to conserve energy. Now that is what Al Gore COULD be and that’s all I am saying here.
Carbon credits are a great excuse for not leading the way
just cos mr gore has little credibility it doesnt mean the cause has no credibility
I should mention two people that come to mind who put into practice (and for a long time now) what they do preach. I can respect that, and most do, even though they might not agree with them, they do earn respect and deserve attention for it.
One is Daryl Hannah » http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daryl_Hannah
The other is Ed Begly Jr » http://www.edbegley.com/environment/
Neither are JUST getting their house and cars in order, they’ve BEEN that way for some time now.
I just noticed, the link I had tried to post didn’t actually display. You’ll just have to do a search for it on Newsvine if you’re interested.
everyone’s a hippacrite when it comes to something…
i think eveyone should just get over the whole ordeal…
honestly, how long have people been preaching about global warming and stuff…
but its not just that its everything…
show me ONE person that is true to EVERYTHING they say and then i might back down…
but the only one i know is jesus and NOONE is like him so…
I think that he won an award and M. Etheridge won an award proves beyond doubt that the global warming theory is true.
There should be a wink after that last post.
Debbie, hi, I think we all indeed have hypocrisy, some more or less but that doesn’t mean we don’t address hypocrisy when we see it. We all need to be teachable and willing to examine ourselves but we also need to be clear we don’t have an obvious log in our own eye.
