Granite Girls Soccer

As you already know, Laura has been playing for Granite on their girl’s soccer team.

Naturally I have taken this as yet another fun photography opportunity.
This has been a challenge. I was used to taking photos of Miquel’s tennis, but soccer was a whole other matter.

The team has worked hard and are having a good season.

Call Me Critical

My mom lately has taken back to doing an old favorite hobby of hers, reading. Why? She has had enough of the news, and has directed the time she used to watch the news back to reading.

I can’t say as I blame her, the news is quite frustrating.

Take the recent news of New Jersey’s governor, they figure he will be able to govern from his hospital bed via video . I am sorry, but this is the same governor that got put IN the hospital after a traffic accident with his vehicle (a SUV) going 90+ miles per hour WITHOUT a seatbelt. Call me critical, but I don’t think he should be governing anything. I don’t know about New Jersey, but he broke two Maryland laws right there. I don’t think he should be governing anything, period, let alone from his hospital bed via video.

Next news, Sheryl Crow . Crow, in an effort to help global warming, gave a thoughtful suggestion on using less toilet paper. She has suggested using "only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where two to three could be required". Call me critical, but I am sick and tired of the privelidged elite like her and Al Gore and all of their rich friends jumping on their private jets and telling the rest of us how to live. Another of her brilliant suggestions? Use your sleeve when dining. At least it didn’t make Rosie O’ Donnell lose her sense of humor .

Then comes this ariticle , predicting $4.00 per gallon would unfaze most of us. Not so. If they are so sure, they should talk to me, I won’t be so unfazed. I drive as little as possible now, I can’t hardly imagine how I would manage to get by with less, and it would cost me more? That article makes about as much sense as the latest, asking motorists to pay $8 to enter New York City. Call me critical, but that might sound like an easy fee for Mayor Michael Bloomberg , ranked 44 by Forbes magazine in the top 400 of richest Americans. (He was ranked 142th in its list of the The World’s Billionaires ) Can you imagine what a daily fee of $8 could be to the average person?

One highlight, one article’s answer to saving the planet? Stop going to work. :)
Apparently I am ahead of the game in environmentalism, I am working from the inside of my home.

Frankly, you can call me critical if you want to, but I don’t think I am. I think I make sense to us regular people.

TV 4 U

Some movies and TV shows have fallen out of copyright and are available for free download and viewing.  TV4U has classic online television and movies like The Red Skelton Show, Petticoat Junction (one of my favorites as a little girl), Mothers in Law, and even game shows like Concentration. There is one small downside, and that is that the site makes you watch commercials. When I turned on the Red Skelton Show (I remembered how my sister liked that show), I noticed with that one, some of the commercials were the very ones broadcast during the show, so that was kind of interesting!

Have a look at TV4U

Alec Baldwin

Except as actors, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger never have impressed me much, but a subject close to my heart appeared in the news, and I find myself heartbroken for their daughter, and all the children out there who have to live with emotional and physical abuse.

In case you missed the news , upset that his 11 year-old daughter wasn’t in to take his call, Mr. Baldwin left a horrifying message on her answering machine , with threats, cursing, and name-calling such as "a thoughtless little pig."

After listening to the message , I feel the court was in its right to suspend his visitation rights. He needs help. He seemed too comfortable leaving such a message, and it appeared to not be a first for this kind of outburst to me. Besides the name calling and threats, to a mom, I was also miffed that he didn’t even seem to know his daughter’s age!

Parents, there is never a reason to talk to your children that way. Ever.
Some would argue, there isn’t ever a reason to talk to another human being that way.

Twelfth Night

Last night I had the pleasure of taking my daughter, her friend Erin, as well as having
the company of my son and his friends Mike and Ross to see a play.
The play we went to see was Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.”

The main reason we went was to see Crazy Andrew’s performance as Sebastian.

The stage for Twelfth Night

The performance was held at Anne Arundel Community College. It was kind of
interesting to go to back to where I once attended school. Everything seemed
bigger this visit.

The show was delightful, with each character cast perfectly.

As I watched the performance, I couldn’t help but think many of the lines in the play
were quotes often heard. So I looked them up:

Famous Quotes from Twelfth Night

“Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them”. - (Quote Act II, Scene V).

“Love sought is good, but giv’n unsought is better” . - (
Quote Act III, Scene I) If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.
That strain again! it had a dying fall:
O, it came o’er my ear like the sweet sound 1
That breathes upon a bank of violets,
Stealing and giving odour!
Quote Act i. Scene 1.
Is it a world to hide virtues in? Twelfth Night Quote Act i. Scene 3.

We will draw the curtain and show you the picture. Twelfth Night Quote Act i. Scene 5. Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty. Twelfth Night Quote Act ii. Scene 3.

He does it with a better grace, but I do it more natural. Twelfth Night Quote Act ii. Scene 3.

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ’em.
Twelfth Night Quote Act ii. Scene 5.

This is very midsummer madness. Quote Act iii. Scene 4.

Out of the jaws of death. Quote Twelfth Night. Act iii. Scene 4.

We had fun, and Andrew was awesome! Of course!

The guys all ended up at our house to big plates of mom’s “macarrons”. (A pasta dish from Spain).

Appleton

My son would like me to move to Appleton, Wisconsin. I looked it up, it looks like a lovely place. It looks like a place I could take my camera and just have a grand time.

I suppose it’s not out of the question. :)

So I named my latest Sim City 4 endeavor Appleton, and what the heck, John Fieck (Enric’s good friend) is the mayor!

Things are all going well in Appleton…

10 Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces

Michael Jordan’s divorce in December was reportedly the most expensive celebrity split in entertainment history.

Forbes.com said Juanita Jordan, who was married to Michael Jordan for 17 years, could possibly get more than $150 million.

 2. Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey, which cost him an estimated $150 million.

 3. Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving, $100 million.

 4.  Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison ($85 million).

 5. Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva ($80 million).

 6. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, whose divorce could cost him more than $60 million.

 7. James Cameron and Linda Hamilton ($50 million).

 8. Michael and Diandra Douglas ($45 million and two homes).

 9. Lionel and Diane Richie ($20 million).

10. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall ($15 to $25 million).

One thing is for sure. I certainly didn’t marry for money, nor, does it seem will I divorce for a lot of money!

Taxes

I just had to write a check along with sending my tax forms today. I don’t think I should have owed anything with the little I make, but heaven knows, Uncle Sam will find a way to waste it somehow, so there will be my contribution.

I didn’t pass with flying colors Economics in school, but that wasn’t because it was so hard, it was more like Mr. Marcello, however old and sweet, was SO boring and the notes Donna and I passed around to each other was so much more interesting. :)

Maybe Mr Marcello should have added this little story to his class:

This is a very simple way to understand the tax laws. Let’s put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand.

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten totals $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this.

The first four men-the poorest-would pay nothing, the fifth would pay $1, the sixth would pay $3, the seventh $7, the eighth $12, the ninth $18, and the tenth man-the richest-would pay $59.

That’s what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement-until one day, the owner threw them a curve (in tax language, a tax cut).

“Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20.” So now dinner for the ten only cost $80.00.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six-the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his “fair share?”

The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would end up being paid to eat their meal. So the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so the fifth man paid nothing, the sixth pitched in $2, the seventh paid $5, the eighth paid $9, the ninth paid $12, leaving the tenth man with a bill of $52 instead of his earlier $59. Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free.

But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. “Hey, out of the $20 savings, I only got a dollar, but he got $7!” declared the sixth man as he pointed to the tenth.

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man, “I only saved a dollar, too… It’s unfair that he got seven times more than me!”

“That’s true!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $7 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison who have never paid for anything, “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night he didn’t show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. When it came time to pay the bill, they discovered a little late something that was very important. They were fifty-two dollars short of paying the bill!

Imagine that!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college instructors, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore.

No More Carpet

If it wasn’t enough that I had to move 25+ years of living into one room from a three floor house, often something that took my spirits down was to look at the aging and damanged carpet on my bedroom floor.

Now, there are a group of fellows that spend a lot of time in our home visiting my son, and more often than not, they aren’t doing much of anything.

So, I got this idea. Ripping up the carpet is a lot of work for one lady, but a group of guys could make it easier and faster!

So I put them right to work. They were awesome and the floor looks great!

Thanks to Miquel and his friends, Mike, Ross, and Andrew, what a tremendous job!

First I prepared a favorite brunch, tortilla de patatas, then Mike and I started the project with Herb Alpert music. He said he actually found “Zorba the Greek” kinda motivating, but later Miquel soon added his songs to the playlist, and the work went into full swing. With little more than an end of a small hammer’s prying end, and my dad’s box cutter and a lot of elbow grease and muscle, the job was done in less than a day.

Now I can slide across the room in my socks.

:)

Easter, Present Day

I know I posted some older photos of past Easter’s last time, so it only seems right to post the most recent.

Easter was a cold one this year, so that explains Miquel’s trench coat and gloves.
Laura wore a new dress sewn by my mom, and she looked just dazzling in it, which is good because
Mom worked hard!

The rest of the day was a nice one, spent with family and nice homemade meal of ham, mashed potatoes, and every kind of vegetable one could imagine.

Past Easters

I’ve been going through old photos and scanning them.
I thought I would share some past Easters with you.

The first is my mom and I in front of our new house. I guess I was 7 or 8.

The second is me in our Baltimore back yard.

Next to last, my sister Linda and I with little Kimmy. I suppose I was around 14.

Last, is one of my favorite photos. My mom and dad in front of the church we attended that Easter.
Dad is holding a very young Miquel and Enric is standing in front of mom.

“Whenever we take a chance and enter unfamiliar territory or put ourselves into the
world in a new way, we experience fear. Very often this fear keeps us from moving
ahead with our lives. The trick is to feel the fear and do it anyway.”
