$30 Billion to Fight Aids
I heard this news story on the radio as I was cleaning the leaves out of the pool. A 4-year-old HIV positive boy from Mozambique jumped into President Bush’s arms today during a press conference. “President Bush Wednesday pledged to commit $30 billion over a five-year period towards the fights against HIV/AIDS, doubling what is already the largest international initiative ever dedicated to a specific disease. If Congress approves the requests, the U.S. will have committed $48.3 … Read entire article »

Prepare to Believe
This month, a place I have been waiting for has finally opened. It is 9 hours away from me, but I long to see it. It’s called the Creation Museum. One of the co-founders of the museum is Ken Ham, a charming and very funny Australian who I have enjoyed in book, in lectures, and the Answers in Genesis Website. It might take a long while before I get the opportunity to see the museum, till then, I was glad to find Dr. R.A. Mosley’s flickr gallery, where he posted a very nice set of images, that gives a very good tour. Will you be going to see the Creation Museum? … Read entire article »

The Graduate: Finally!
After months of preparation, the night of the graduation ceremony finally came. Not without a few tears, that’s for sure. The whole day seemed a mad rush, but as the evening approached it all seemed to come together. Miquel had his favorite dish, “Fideus a la Casola” and as I was running late, felt like I was in the Indy 500 trying to make it to the church by the designated 5:00. (It was 19 miles … Read entire article »

Memorial Day 2007
As each year, we went to Kinder Park for our church’s annual Picnic, help on our celebrate day of Memorial Day. Very hot and humid, but great food, a family atmosphere and lots of games to play for the young and young at heart. It started with a devotional message by our pastor at the pavillion. Miquel and Tiffany entertain baby Jared. Miranda and Laura were one of the first to get their plates full. Erin waits in the food … Read entire article »

A Tale of Two Houses
(Except this tale is true! Ever since Mr. Jeff convinced us to go to D.C. and we saw for ourselves in the National Building Museum a "green" house , this has been an area of fascination for me) HOUSE # 1: A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2, 400.00 per month. In natural gas alone, this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American Home. This house is not in the northern or Midwestern “snow belt .” It’s in the South. … Read entire article »

Jr – Sr
One evening, some weeks ago, this young, lovely and usually shy & demure Elise came into our home, went down the steps into Miquel’s room, woke him up out of a sound sleep, and asked him to her Jr-Sr. Of course he agreed. A Jr-Sr is like the end of the school year’s formal affair. Elise opens the wrist corsage Miquel ordered for her; sweetheart roses and carnations with a ribbon to match her dress. They pose here … Read entire article »

Al
I saw this a few days ago on the Drudge Report, and thought just to let it go…but…I can’t. This is Al Gore in his office. How much energy is he consuming here? Three huge computer monitors, and one large big screen TV. For that matter, how many trees lost it all to that pile on his desk? I just feel sometimes that the Global Warming Movement should perhaps get a “recount” on a new spokesperson. 2008 tax credit … Read entire article »

Snow and Record Breaking Cold
I have never hid, even since I started this blog, my confusion over the weather, climate and the global warming debate. It seems like for every scientific evidence one gives on a certain slant, others can chime in with evidence in the other direction. More confusing is weather headlines of late: THE icy weather of snow, hail and heavy rain that has swept across South Africa over the past few days has set 54 weather records. "The South … Read entire article »

Follow Up Poverty
Now it’s going to seem like I am picking on John Edwards, but I really am not. I just can’t help but read the headlines, and his name keeps coming up. This time, our expert on poverty, $400 haircuts, and $55,000 speeches has a new source of income according to TheStreet.com. It seems that the ship with sunken treasure out there in the Atlantic worth $500 million is owned by OMR, Odyssey Marine Research, of which John Edwards is a major invester. That gives him about 10% of $500 million. There’s more: OMR stock, which closed at $4.60 on Friday before news of the discovery, has since rocketed to $7.35. The value of Fortress’ stake could be as much as $51 million. OMR stock peaked Monday morning at just over $9, valuing the company … Read entire article »

Irony
“I am opposed to millionaires, but it would be dangerous to offer me the position.” ~Mark Twain Recently, (and I wish I could re-locate the page), I found a site that said that if I answered a questionaire, that it would point me to the presidential candidate closest to my beliefs and the issues that were most important to me. When it finished, it said which candidate’s issues was nearest to mine. I didn’t agree with the result, but liked the idea of dealing with the issues. Sometimes I feel that people vote for personalities and not their platform (do some even list their policies anymore?) Anyway, since that ‘test’ seemed to be a bit off, I will likely have to do my homework the old fashioned way. So these days, news articles … Read entire article »

More, The Graduate
Seems like there are certain occasions that just take more than one day around here. Miquel’s high school graduation seems to be just such an occasion. Yesterday at church during the morning service, all the graduates were recognized by Pastor Caleb, and given gifts. The church was very generous. They each received a PC study Bible. From the looks of it, it is a tremendous piece of software. PC Study Bible Discovery Reference Library 5 Later, in the church’s … Read entire article »

New Project: Boz & Oz
It’s been awhile since I have had a new project in the works, and it sure does get the juices flowing when I do get involved with something new. This time even more so, as I have a partner! I can’t take credit for the concept, as I found the idea at a very interesting blog site called Brit and Grit . They have a style much different than I would, but I could appreciate it and found myself returning to … Read entire article »

Beheadings on the Rise
In spite of my previous blog regarding abiding by the law and abusers should be punished, I wouldn’t go as far as Saudi Arabia. The punishment for the following is beheading: murder rape armed robbery drug smuggling apostasy (turning your back on Islam) witchcraft This practice used to be limited to on a Friday, but now they are so much on the increase, that they had to spread it out beyond Fridays. So far this year, 95 people have been killed, 49 being foreigners, 12 Pakistanis, 10 Nigerians (three were women), nine Afghans, six Indians, as well as citizens from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Syria, Jordan, Ethiopia, Chad and Yemen. This nearly doubles the number of those killed from all of last year. Immigration: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
It seems our government officials in Washington are trying to make a deal regarding the 12 million illegal immigrants in the USA. This seems to be an issue where there are many disagreements. The Good More than a few economist are praising the idea of immigration reform as they feel it will be good for the economy. On paper it sounds good, right? 12 million people is 12 million people paying taxes and becoming a driving force into the economy? Or is it that they are already fueling the economy, but because they are illegal, Uncle Sam’s pocket doesn’t get filled? The Bad But doesn’t it have to be about more than the economy? I mean, in a large sense, it seems to be rewarding lawbreakers. Also one has to wonder if the money … Read entire article »

The Hatch
No, this isn’t a blog referring to "the Hatch" in the program, "Lost". This is a hatch designed by the Roman Catholic hospital in the city of Kumamoto, Japan. This was designed to give people a place to drop of unwanted newborns. Now as hard as it is to believe it should ever come to this, a mailbox looking contraption with images of storks on it, apparently had on it’s opening day its first ‘drop’. Although it wasn’t a newborn as might be expected, but a 3 or 4 year old toddler. Toddler left at new baby hatch … Read entire article »

“Sniff”
After seven seasons, Gilmore Girls has finally aired it’s last new episode. Laura and I were looking forward to watching it tonight for days now, but we couldn’t shake the blues when the last ‘la la la’ that is the typical music of the show faded out. It ended as it should, Lorelai and Rory at Luke’s Diner. My most tearful moment of this last show? It came when Luke was sewing up every last tarp in town, so … Read entire article »

Mothers Are Worthy
"Mothers make memories the heart keeps forever." Today was another extraordinary Sunday at Anchor Baptist Church, made even sweeter by honoring mothers on this Mother’s Day. The special music was this side of heaven and the preaching was memorable. It started with the congregation being asked to sing and consider the depth of the words of the hymn, "A Christian Home" O give us homes built firm upon the Saviour, Where Christ is Head, and Counsellor and Guide; Where ev’ry child is taught His love and favor And gives his heart to Christ, the crucified: How sweet to know that tho’ his footsteps waver His faithful Lord is walking by his side! O give us homes with godly fathers, mothers, Who always place their hope and trust in Him; Whose tender patience turmoil never bothers, Whose calm and courage trouble cannot … Read entire article »

Child Executions ?
Perhaps we are so sheltered from bad things in this world, that what is everyday to some, is impossible to believe to us. Such was the case when I watched Bill O’Reilly last night, introducing news about child executions in Iran from his guest, Nazanin Afshin-Jam . My ears couldn’t believe what they were hearing and were in denial through most of the report. Now, apparently the United Nations has an international law, and to me it … Read entire article »

CNN, There’s a Difference between Sex and Rape.
Normally, I wouldn’t blog about just a distasteful subject in any kind of detail, but when I see the filthy facts watered down in the news, then I can’t help myself. I saw this in full disclosure on the television, but little is shown on the net about all that was said. It seems that before we even had a chance to get over Imus’ remarks, along comes Opie and Anthony with the crudest of remarks: One of their regular guests, a man called Homeless Charlie, says, “I’ll tell you what—what’s that George Bush b***h, um, Rice…? Condoleezza Rice? … I’d love to f**k that b***h dead, man,” at which point the rest of the studio erupts into laughter. Homeless Charlie says again, “I’ll f**k that b***h to death,” to which Opie/Anthony reply, … Read entire article »

Maria vs. Hugo
I watched Sean Hannity’s America tonight, and was impressed by the sincerity, passion, and bravery of an actress, María Conchita Alonso. You might remember her from a few movies – Moscow on the Hudson and Predator 2 are the two that first came to my mind. María Alonso was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba. She moved to Venezuela with her parents when she was 5 years old. She took her first steps in show business when she … Read entire article »

I was talking on the phone with another homeschooling mom who also has a child graduating this year. Her daughter and my Miquel will be graduating together. In the few get-togethers we have had so far, both mom and her daughter have been a delight. The phone call was about a project she and her husband has taken on for the graduating seniors, that of a slide show for the ceremony. It was so nice to talk to Shaina and learn more about her. What was even more sweet was a link she gave me, that would help me to learn even more about her. How sweet to see someone’s testimony and story in a very creative way. A "comic" if you will. I teased her on the phone, but she knew … Read entire article »

Samuel Adams
My son is nearly finished his civics lessons for the year. Nearing the end of the book, there is attention paid to certain patriots in our history. One of the first mentioned, is Samuel Adams. In his book, it says of Adams, "He stands as a prime example of how strong, Christian character can have an impact upon a nation….the austere purity of his life witnessed the sincerity of his profession. Evening and morning his house was a house of prayer…" I was impressed by this quote of Adams and immediately set out to learn more about him. Here are some quotations of Samuel Adams: "It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds." “Mankind are governed more by their feelings … Read entire article »
