The Golden Compass
There seems to be a question on whether a new movie, The Golden Compass, [part of the Dark Materials Trilogy] coming out starring Nicole Kidman is a good movie with some bad intentions… I have received one warning email from Margie with a link to Snopes , and another warning email from a homeschooling group. Neither said that the movie didn’t have the right to exist, but they each felt that the movie would lead many to rush to buy the book and then they would be in for a surprise, as the movie glosses over a great deal of what the book is really about. Apparently, the movie is based on a book by Philip Pullman. I suppose I will see for myself soon what the commotion and controversy is about, … Read entire article »

Toys…For Toddlers?
“Cellphones, laptops, digital cameras and MP3 music players are among the hottest gift items this year. For preschoolers.” Say what?? I guess it makes sense when the little ones see their parents spend a lot of time with high tech items. I have often driven by our local Toys R Us and wondered, what do people even buy in there anymore? “The bigger toy companies don’t even call it the toy business anymore,” Mr. Silver said. “They’re in the … Read entire article »

Black Friday – Cyber Monday
I knew about Black Friday, in fact, years ago I worked in retail in the middle of that chaos, and this year my daughter insisted on being a shopping part of it as part of her birthday celebration. In spite of housing woes and gas costs, the predicted gloom for Friday’s sales was not meant to be. Associated Press reports: "According to ShopperTrak RCT Corp., which tracks sales at more than 50,000 retail outlets, total sales rose 8.3 … Read entire article »

We Gather Together
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving, with mom doing an outstanding job of making the house warm, cozy, inviting, and the food amazing. The weather was unusual, as the temperature hit nearly 80 degrees! Then clouds rolled in, the wind blew, and so many of the leaves that looked like they were going to stubbornly never come down, fell – making it looked like we hadn’t done any raking at all by the time people arrived. Stacey keeps … Read entire article »

Laura Turns 14
It’s hard to believe my baby is 14. I remember 14. Because I remember 14, I appreciate the young lady Laura is. She is bright, lively, energetic, thoughtful, and loving. Just don’t get on her bad side. Laura decided to spend her birthday, this year the day after Thanskgiving, to have a small affair; a day at the mall, getting her nails done with friends, shopping, and then take in a movie. The movie then followed … Read entire article »

Give Thanks
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” Colossians 3:15 “Thanksgiving is nothing if not a glad and reverent lifting of the heart to God in honor and praise for His goodness.” [Robert Casper Lintner] “We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction.” [Harry A. Ironside] “The most holy service we can render to God is to … Read entire article »

“Just Shut Up” Ringtone
While my blogging friend Grit fears the world has lost its mind, I sometimes see evidence of some sanity, like this ringtone. It did my heart good to hear on the news that the King of Spain, tired of Venezuelan’s dictator, Hugo Chavez, ranting on and on, finally told him, “Why don’t you shut up?” About half a million people have downloaded a mobile phone ringtone featuring the phrase “Por que no te callas?” The ringtone is thought to have generated around $2.2 million for the companies selling it. T-shirts and mugs featuring the words are also becoming a profitable business. The people of Venezuela are also interested in the ringtones. Some days ago, an old friend, Alex, sent me a link to the YouTube video that is now popular in Spain. Alex is in … Read entire article »

Be Thankful
I don’t know how it happened, but suddenly, it’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving. As my son said to me on the phone today, one of his professors at school said, “Let the eating season begin.” It’s so true, from now till New Years, I am sure even our ankles get fat. ““““““` At church today, there was a story inserted in our bulletin that I would like to share with you: Be Thankful (17 were not!) “Just a short drive from … Read entire article »

Confusing Headlines
I have to give Drudge Report credit, he reports both sides of the headlines, even if side by side they are very confusing. In that he does that, says to me, the real truth is not really known. Next to an adorable polar bear image is the headline: WARMING WARNING OF ‘UNRECOGNIZABLE’ EARTH That’s very strong language, even to the inside of the article… “VALENCIA, Spain (AP) – The Earth is hurtling toward a warmer climate at a … Read entire article »

Christmas Lyrics
Well I haven’t taken leave of my senses and started to celebrate Christmas before Thanksgiving, but I found in my stats that many people were looking for Christmas lyrics. That prompted me to add Christmas lyrics to Barb’s Lyric’s Blog. So, in no particular order, you can find the lyrics to Christmas favorites HERE What are YOUR favorite Christmas songs? To name a few mine are: O Holy Night O Come O Come Emmanuel (Particularly by Bryan Duncan) – it has … Read entire article »

Milk is the New Oil
Have you purchased milk lately? “Driven by a combination of climate change, trade policies and competition for cattle feed from biofuel producers, global milk prices have doubled over the past two years. In parts of the United States, milk is more expensive than gasoline. There are reports of cows being stolen on Wisconsin dairy farms.” The article goes on to say there is shortage of milk. Pizza parlors and ice cream vendors are raising their prices. Starbucks has raised the price of its drinks Hershey’s raised the price of candy but still had a 96% drop in profit Cadburys and Kraft also have seen a loss of profit. Maybe I should stop worrying about replacing my TV that just broke and get a cow. Just don’t want it to fall on me. Herald Tribune Article: In a … Read entire article »

Bill of No Rights
Apparently my sister and her husband are sending me a few good things of late. In my Inbox came "The Bill of No Rights" and although it took me some time to locate the actual writer, I finally found it. Often credited to Mitchell Kaye, a Georgia state representative, it was really written in 1993 by Lewis Napper, who ran for U.S. Senate in 2000 as a Libertarian. Got to love those Libertarians. For that matter, got to love any party that isn’t the only two that dominate Washington and look the same anymore. So here it goes, the "Bill of No Rights" "We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure … Read entire article »

Something the Lord Made
When people recommend movies to me, they really do a good job. It must be because they know I watch so few, and certain ones really must impress upon them that I would like it. One particular movie, I watched today, came from my sister, Linda, and her husband, George. I cried, I loved it. I hope you might get a chance to see it too. This is a true story and I liked how the movie moved back in time to Baltimore and Johns … Read entire article »

Curvy Women
I thought the following news item was encouraging… Curvy Women More Intelligent New research suggests a link between waist-to-hip ratio and brain development. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California at Santa Barbara looked at data from a study of more than 16,000 women and girls from 1988 to 1994 that detailed their body measurements, as well as their education level and their scores on various cognitive tests. What they report is that women with waists that were about 70 percent of the diameter of their hips scored slightly better on intelligence tests and tended to have a slightly higher level of education than women with a higher waist-to-hip ratio, or WHR. More here… … Read entire article »

Fear and Disappointments
I have had a hard few weeks. Emotionally, professionally, and personally, it seemed to be a lot of disappointments at once. Where I am not one to dwell on such things, when they keep happening, a new one piling up to the old ones, well then you start to let these pitfalls make you fearful. I was looking to my Bible, but then I saw a little book next to it. "Transforming Fear into Faith" The introduction was brilliant … Read entire article »

Interview
I was recently asked to do an interview for a site that likes to promote photographers and photomemes in a humorous way. Sometimes their humor is a little crude, so when I was approached, I agreed with some hesitancy. I am not new to being interviewed, but each time, I must admit, it is a very nervous experience for me. I remember the first one being TuCows, who via ICQ interviewed Mike and I regarding our site, MXskinz . Next, when I made my trip to Spain, a newspaper from Sabadell, Spain asked for two interviews, one regarding my internet life and the other the subject of homeschooling . Later, a Spanish magazine called Clara, interviewed me also regarding the theme of Homeschooling . That was a real one to be nervous about, taking a defensive against … Read entire article »

Possible Headline
This week at our church, we have been treated to 4 nights and Sunday morning of preaching and meetings from Pastor Wayne Burggraff of Faith Baptist Church in Lebanon, Pennsylvania . He has been teaching at Anchor about "The Life of David". Every sermon was good, each lesson something to absorb, but this last night, Pastor Wayne told an illustration I thought to share with everyone. Normally I would try to grab the written story and post it here, but with his permission, I put the … Read entire article »

Facebook: More popular than Porn
When I learned of Facebook, I didn’t get very excited about it. It didn’t seem user friendly, and it didn’t seem as easy as MySpace. Also, since I create MySpace layouts , I kept looking for a way to personalize Facebook, and there didn’t seem to be any. I didn’t get an account until my daughter-in-law did and I learned she was giving baby updates on it – then I signed up right away! I am so glad I did. Since then, I have been able to connect with people I haven’t seen in ages, and kept in touch with others that had to move far away, like Thailand! New Client: Inspiration Chiro
One never knows where new clients will come from, but I must say, they are extra special when they come to you from admiring a piece of your artwork. I never sold a Terragen print before, only those in digital form, and set about seeing how I could do … Read entire article »

Stonewall Hillary
"…but [let] your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment." – James 5:12 The political news story of late is how much Hillary flip-flops on her position on the issues. This is no surprise to me, in fact, it is hardly a news story at all as far as I am concerned. Bill and Hillary have been pandering to every crowd, changing their stories from … Read entire article »
