Little Ice Age

While here in Maryland, we are going through some hot and sticky summer days, it was curious to read the next climate change prediction out of Mexico :

An expert from the National Autonomous University of Mexico predicted that in about ten years the Earth will enter a "little ice age" which will last from 60 to 80 years and may be caused by the decrease in solar activity.

Maybe that explains why in New Zealand, ski resorts are claiming their largest snow base ever .

Whatever is going on, sounds refreshing as we are hot even with the AC and fans going here.

That prediction isn’t just coming out of Mexico. Some indicators and reports are saying that global temperatures, rather than rising, have actually been falling for the last several years. A good site with daily links to various stories around the glob is Steve Milloy’s JunkScience.com.

When we can, we normally flee Arkansas during August, when temperatures get into the high 90s and low 100s for the entire month, with very high humidity. Last year, temperatures were consistently over 100 and the day before we left for an extended trip was 107.

This year the first couple of days were hot, but since then temperatures have struggled to get out of the 70s. and it’s been raining. It never rains in August to this extent in Arkansas.

    Hi Barb,

I’ve taken the time to search around, find, and look at the temperature data available to “climate scientists.” It is crap. For instance, there is no – as in 0, none, nill – data available for India, most of Africa, and Siberia. The only place where sufficient data points exist is the US, and that data shows some cooling, along with wild swings in some areas. This sounds a lot like what happened during the Little Ice Age, something like from 1300 to 1900 AD, during which period such weather as cold snaps of sufficient severity as to freeze birds to death in flight were reported in our NE in July, Greenland turned cold enough to drive out the Vikings, and New York Harbor regularly froze solid enough that people could walk to Staten Island.

There’s an excellent documentary on the subject, “little Ice Age, Big Chill.” I’ll let you hunt it up while I make arrangements to stock up on firewood ;)

  3. Ok, so in a few years time we’ll be forced to use CFC filled aerosols again and open up that ozone hole good and proper?? I have a theory that no-one really quite knows what’s going to happen! Cheers, Dan
