Blizzard 2009
I don’t think that our weatherman could have predicted this. They started off saying a chance of snow with some accumulation. Then they began talking inches, and pretty soon, some time later, they were talking FEET! Today, it was a BLIZZARD! Enric decided fairly early to get started on cleaning the driveway and cleaning off the cars. Silas watched his daddy with excited interest. Enric starts cleaning off Yaya’s car. Silas became increasingly excited about to go out in the … Read entire article »

Show Me the Money
Car dealers are saying, “Show me the money” when it comes to their participation in the government’s Cash for Clunkers. Here’s the figure: $2.878 billion. That’s how much money the government owes car dealers for the “Cash for Clunkers” program. “Out of 142 deals they owe us for, we’ve gotten paid on seven,” Lou Tornabeni of Ettleson Hyundai said. “We had 102 cash for clunkers,” Carm Scarpace of Westfield Ford said. “We’ve been paid for one.” With each Cash for Clunkers deal worth between $3,500 and $4,500, many dealerships are anxiously awaiting their government payday. Some, like Advantage Chevrolet, which sold cars up until the last minute, have more than half a million dollars on the line. “It was chaotic towards the end,” Jason Roberts said. Roberts says his dealership sold 142 cars under the program … Read entire article »

Higher Gas Prices, Again.
I have always been on the side that government should stay out of business. They can’t run themselves, why on earth would we trust them to run a business. Obama buys up the car industry, and according to Ralph Nader, not necessary: The proximate cause of the bankruptcy was supposed to be the inability of GM and the government’s auto task force to reach an accommodation with GM’s bondholders. But late last week, the bondholder problem was moving toward rapid resolution, and was clearly resolvable. Why then are GM and its multibillion government financier proceeding with bankruptcy? The bankruptcy and the GM restructuring plan are the product of a secretive, unaccountable, Wall Street-minded government task force that assumed power because of a Congressional abdication of historic magnitude. By all rights, the restructuring plan … Read entire article »

Free Cars for Welfare Recipients
Now here is an interesting function of government… Gov. Deval Patrick’s free wheels for welfare recipients program is revving up despite the stalled economy, as the keys to donated cars loaded with state-funded insurance, repairs and even AAA membership are handed out to get them to work. But the program – fueled by a funding boost despite the state’s fiscal crash – allows those who end up back on welfare to keep the cars anyway. The program, which is provided by the State Department of Transitional Assistance, gives out about 65 cars a year, said DTA Commissioner Julia Kehoe. The state pays for the car’s insurance, inspection, excise tax, title, registration, repairs and a AAA membership for one year at a total cost of roughly $6,000 per car. Kehoe admitted about 20 percent of those … Read entire article »
