Accepted help from the Netherlands when they offered it shortly after the accident.  The Dutch, experienced in the oil business, offered prompt help for oil skimming booms and plans to create barriers to stop the oil from infiltrating into wetland areas. 2. Golf and War

Apparently the Polish people are upset at Obama’s miss of the funeral of  their President Lech Kaczynski. True, Iceland’s volcano made the skies a dangerous place. While other world leaders found other ways to get there, Obama took the day to play golf. Poor taste? Perhaps. This has led certain newspapers to compare Bush and Obama with golf and war. Mr. Obama has played golf far more often than former President George W. Bush. In his eight years in office, Mr. Bush played just 24 times. His last time as president was Oct. 13, 2003. He said in 2008 that he gave up golf “in solidarity” with the families of soldiers who were dying in Iraq. “I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander … Read entire article »

It’s All About Me

Is our president a narcissist? A  news article is suggesting that he is, or perhaps Obama is just saying it himself. In just 41 speeches so far this year, not including this week’s big speech at the United Nations, Obama has talked about himself nearly 1,200 times – 1,198 to be exact. (That breaks down to 1,121 “I”s and just 77 “me”s.) And that just includes 34 weekly addresses and his seven major speeches. Count the hundreds of other public speeches and he’d be off the charts. More here … Read entire article »

Presumptions

Today, the day after Labor Day, as our usual, Laura and I began school. This is her 11th year. Our time ran past the President’s speech. Oh darn! Not that I felt it was a big deal one way or another. I don’t think we really had intended to watch it. Especially when it was leaked out what was attached to it, given to the teachers. For example, it is suggested that students in grades 7-12 should, before the President’s speech, write their responses to the following questions: “Why does President Obama want to speak with us today?;” “How will he inspire us?:” and “How will he challenge us?” “What inspired you about President Obama’s speech?,” and “what lines or phrases from the President’s speech resonate with you?” How dare Obama or his administration PRESUME … Read entire article »

An Acmetal for Your Thoughts

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, receiving support from the Canadian economist Prof Mundell and Nobel-prize winner Professor Robert Mundell, is proposing a one world currency, the Acmetal. Mr Nazarbayev’s coining of “acmetal” combines the Greek word “acme,” meaning peak or best, and “capital.”   Mr Nazarbayev and Prof Mundell urged the Group of 20 leading developed and developing economies to form a working group on the proposal at their summit on the global economic crisis in London on April 2. “We should deliver our thoughts and the thoughts of this conference to the leaders of those countries,” Mr Nazarbayev said, referring to the G8 and G20 nations.   More from The Australian … Read entire article »

If You Were President

This was from an email Lisa sent me: So, I was talking to this little girl Catherine, the daughter of some friends, and she said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there with us - and I asked Catherine – "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?" Catherine replied – "I would give houses to all the homeless people." "Wow – what a worthy goal you have there, Catherine." I told her, "You don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that, you can come over to my house and clean up all the dog poop in my back yard and I will pay you $5 dollars. Then we can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can … Read entire article »

Outsiders View

Having friends all around the world, it’s often interesting to hear how they view things about what goes on here. Namely, the topic of some discussion has been our elections. I had to chuckle when Petra (from Holland) sat down at the dinner table recently and stated, “If Hillary or Obama wins to be president, this country is in deep trouble.” Well she got a lot of nods of agreement. But we all agreed, Petra included, that the funniest statement … Read entire article »
