Oh No I’ve Said Too Much
That’s a line from the song, Losing My Religion from REM. These days, there seems to be some confusion as to what religion Obama is faithful to. Perhaps that’s because over the few years of his candidacy and presidency he has sent the us some mixed messages. … Read entire article »

Blink
Currently Reading: Blink “You are a very cynical man; has anyone ever told you that? I’ve spent half a day with you, and honestly I don’t know what you believe in.” “I believe in lots of things. God for instance.” “God? But you despise religion?” “I believe in God because only an idiot could look at the intricate balance of nature and believe it was not designed. Believe it or not, some people still believe a watch can form … Read entire article »

Closing Statement
History class took Laura and I to the Scopes Trial today. I learned a lot that I didn’t know before. There are a lot of myths out there on what really happened, but that’s a whole other blog… The closing statement of William Jennings Bryan, died five days later after the Scopes trail. Perhaps the cruel tactics of Darrow, the ridicule of the press, and the realization that many people had fallen for evolution took it’s toll on him. Clarence Darrow resorted to emotionalism, ridicule, humiliation, and circular reasoning. Darrow called the people of Tennessee ignorant and backward so many times that many of them started professing a belief in evolution just to show they were really intelligent. Here are parts of Bryan’s closing statement: …Religion is not hostile to learning; Christianity has … Read entire article »

Who Cares About the Truth?
From the book, I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist: He said, “I don’t believe the Bible. But if it’s true, then I’ll be in big trouble.” We sometimes ask our students, “What’s the greatest problem in America today? Is it ignorance or is it apathy?” One time a student answered, “I don’t know, and I don’t care!” That sums up the problem in America today. Many of us are ignorant and apathetic about truth… Many … Read entire article »

Seen on a T-Shirt
At our Church Picnic, Tony wore an interesting T-shirt… It says: Religion is humans trying to work their way to God. Christianity is God coming to men and women through a relationship with Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 … Read entire article »

If Elton John ruled the world…
…religion would be banned. Quoted from Elton recently, “From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn’t seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it’s not really compassionate.” I sure hope this doesn’t stop religious organizations all around the world, with their peoples selflessly sacrificing and showing compassion to keep on what they are doing. If they did, how many Live Aids would rock and roll have to … Read entire article »

Rated PG: Too Much Religion
Makers of a new inspirational football movie, “Facing the Giants“, are not very happy with Hollywood giving what would normally be a rated G movie, a PG rating for “for some thematic elements.” I suppose a fair translation of that is “too much religion that could offend.” “We think our rating is correct,” they said of “Facing the Giants.” “I think it gives parents an alert that there may be something in the film they’d want to know about.” “This incident raises the disquieting possibility that MPAA (Motion Picture Assn. of America) considers exposure to Christian themes more dangerous for children than exposure to gratuitous sex and mindless violence,” said Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.). More on the story HERE … Read entire article »

Religion
There is a certain person, who shall remain nameless, who thinks I should dedicate some blog entries to a ‘controversial’ topic. When I think of something controversial, or topics people seem to avoid so as to not rock the boat, Religion and Politics come to mind. I enjoy discussing both, usually in a one on one format. This blog would be a first. Well today at church the pastor had a few things to say about religion…something I have always felt, but didn’t put into words as well as he did. Backing up for a moment, I have always wondered what to answer to people when they ask me, “what religion are you?” No matter what denomination you answer, depending who they know, or know of in that denomination, they will … Read entire article »
