Christmas Presents (Part 2)

Christmas Presents (Part 2)

I was born bald as a bumper but before long, a mob of Shirley Temple (of Doom) curls set in. I really disliked my curls and would often wear a scarf over my head pretending THAT was my hair. It was kinda hard living with everyone fussing over my ‘lovely curls’ and all I ever wanted was a one way trip off of the Good Ship Lollipop. Over the years I have cut them off, … Read entire article »

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve

After all the days of shopping, malls. shops and literally wearing myself out, Christmas Eve was finally here. Not a rule I have always liked, but the kids love it, and that is that they open their presents on Christmas Eve. I didn’t see any reason to change that tradition this year, as Christmas on a Sunday meant we would be in church Christmas morning. Here are some glimpses of the kids at Christmas Eve: They had some … Read entire article »

Amazon.com: 108 Million Items sold this holiday

Did you order from Amazon this Christmas season? If you did you were in a large company of people. Amazon.com Customers Order over 108 Million Items Worldwide During 11th Holiday Season; More Than 99 Percent of Orders Shipped in Time to Meet Holiday Deadlines Worldwide We ordered a few things from Amazon, we did have one item out of about a half a dozen that didn’t arrive in time for Christmas. Kinda curious how the figure 99% was bragged on, and downplayed the 1 million items that did not arrive in time. For my part, I did not like that a phone number for Amazon was not visible on their site to get help. I also felt that when I did get the phone number for them, what I got was a sales … Read entire article »

Overheads

A year after the devastating tsunami, a report emerges in the news that Overheads take up to 1/3 of tsunami funds. Up to about a third of the $590 million U.N. fund spent for the Indian Ocean tsunami relief may have gone to pay for "overhead". It begs to ask, what overhead? Apparently its: administration staff related costs That sounds a bit vague to me. The newspaper also found several U.N. agencies continue to refuse to disclose details of their relief expenditure in spite of earlier pledges of transparency by senior officials. Showing now are 18 percent to 32 percent of the expenditure related to already mentioned "Overhead". Some agencies say non-profit aid organizations should claim no more than 10 percent of project funds for administration costs. Trust the U.N.? No, I don’t. Do you? … Read entire article »

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

Heaven opened herself and placed her most precious on in a human womb. The omnipotent, in one instant, made himself breakable. He who had been spirit became pierceable. He who was larger than the universe became an embryo. And he who sustains the world with a word chose to be dependent upon the nourishment of a young girl. Updated MP3 collection

I never get tired of adding to my MP3 collection, and on this occasion, I had some help from my son. As you can see I have been looking up some Cliff Richard music, but I have been looking for something that I don’t think can be found in the U.S. Years ago, I attended my church to see a movie called HIS LAND, with lovely music sung by Cliff Richard, in particular, He’s Everything to Me. If anyone knows where to find this CD in the U.S., let me know! Here is newest to my collection of MP3’s: 1. Art Garfunkel – Amy Grant – The Animals’ Christmas by Jimmy Webb – 06 – The Friendly Beasts.mp3 2. Blackwood Brothers – He’s Everything to Me.mp3 3. Christmas on Sunday

A month ago, during our church service, and in the spirit of getting ready for Christmas, our pastor spoke to us from the pulpit as usual. He had a cheeky smile and a twinkle in his eyes. He softly and in all seriousness said, “A lot of people have asked me if we will be having church Christmas Sunday.” There was great pause after that. He went on to say, and still in a rather subdued tone, that indeed many churches in the area are actually closing their doors on the Christmas Day that falls on a Sunday. In a near whisper, he added, leaning forward to us, “You know what? That is a legitimate question….. for our culture.” And after another brief pause he added, “but its not a legitimate question for this church or … Read entire article »

Flavio…the goat farmer?

Flavio walked into our lives, this crazy Brazilian, paired with an older couple for his AFS year, and needing an AFS sister. I missed Petra a great deal and was happy to volunteer, and was chosen. Picking him up at the train station with Mrs Alice, one could already tell early on, he was a young man of great determination. He went on to be the hit of the county. He charmed everyone around … Read entire article »

The Howard That Saved Christmas

The Howard That Saved Christmas

For all the Grinches that are trying to ’steal’ Christmas right from under us here in the United States, we could learn a lesson in how to handle them from Down Under. It seems Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard is defending Christmas and urging shopping centres to restore nativity scenes. He refuses to tolerate precisely what is going on here, and that is getting rid of religious symbols of Christmas. It seems that departments stores … Read entire article »

Imagine… a John Lennon Doll

I wonder how John Lennon would feel, 25 years after his life was cut short, about this new 18 inch ‘action figure’ with motion activated sound? Coming in Spring 2006, this is the first officially licensed John Lennon Figure ever. He will “speak” authentic John Lennon phrases and is known as “The New York Years” John Lennon. DIARY OF A SNOW SHOVELER

DIARY OF A SNOW SHOVELER

For those living in the snow belt, you might understand this faster or better than others. This came from the theme “Dealing with Divorce”, which might explain part of the humor behind it. “““““““““““““““““` December 8: 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window, watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. The Cult of the Narcissist

The Cult of the Narcissist By Sam Vaknin Author of “Malignant Self Love – Narcissism Revisited” The narcissist is the guru at the centre of a cult. Like other gurus, he demands complete obedience from his flock: his spouse, his offspring, other family members, friends, and colleagues. He feels entitled to adulation and special treatment by his followers. He punishes the wayward and the straying lambs. He enforces discipline, adherence to his teachings, and common goals. The less accomplished he is in reality – the more stringent his mastery and the more pervasive the brainwashing. The – often involuntary – members of the narcissist’s mini-cult inhabit a twilight zone of his own construction. He imposes on them a shared psychosis, replete with persecutory delusions, “enemies”, mythical narratives, and apocalyptic scenarios if he is flouted. The narcissist’s control is based on ambiguity, unpredictability, fuzziness, and ambient abuse. … Read entire article »

It Takes a Village

It Takes a Village

My mom every year at Christmas creates a village or a Christmas garden, as she calls it. Mostly the garden has gone under the tree, but other years she has had fun doing it on top of the piano. This year, Laura asked her to create the village on top of the piano. I took a about a 100 photos of it already, close up, and they look rather adorable, but then John had an idea. He … Read entire article »

Now, one can actually find out what our Congress is doing for, against, or to you, with this deep political resource from The Washington Post. Here one can see the outcome of the latest bills, how each Senators and House members vote, and you can even see which of them MISSED the most votes ( Jon Corzine, Democrat from New Jersey). 15 years of the World Wide Web

In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee launched the World Wide Web, a multimedia branch of the Internet. According to the Sparks Technology page of CNN, here are the “Top Ten Web Moments” in internet history. Do you agree with them? 10. WiFi hotspots – wireless Internet connectivity appears in airports, hotels and even McDonald’s. 9. Webcams and photo sharing – communication becomes visual, and inboxes fill with baby photos. 8. Skype – telephony turns upside down with free long-distance calls, Ebay snaps it up in September 2005 for $2.6 billion. 7. Live 8 on AOL — five million people watch poverty awareness concerts online in July 2005, setting a new Net record. 6. Napster goes offline — Regulators close the pioneering music swap site in July 2001 and file-sharing goes offshore. 5. Lewinsky scandal – Matt … Read entire article »

Congress & Professional Sports

Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, recently announced he’ll be holding hearings on college football’s Bowl Championship Series, proclaiming, “Too often college football ends in sniping and controversy, rather than winners and losers. The current system of determining who’s No. 1 appears deeply flawed.” Something very disturbing about that recent news to me. I mean, I’d really like to think that the U.S. Congress has MORE IMPORTANT issues to deal with than SPORTS and who’s Number ONE! Anyone else a little suspicious why with all that is going on in our country and the world around us, that this particular topic would take their attention from more important things? Perhaps this Barton quote says it all, “College football is not just an exhilarating sport, but a billion-dollar business that Congress cannot ignore,” Links: Congress Has … Read entire article »

ABUSER RED FLAG WARNINGS

The holidays are a time of year that stress out the most sane and rational person. For those who are victims of irrational and abusive mates, the holidays and special events usually find them being victomized more than usual. For this reason, I thought it was an appropriate time to copy something I received in my email from my Yahoo Group “End Verbal Abuse” ABUSER RED FLAG WARNINGS Jealous of time or resources you give others: Gets angry if you spend ‘too much time’ with friends, family, or children. Always insists that it is ‘a bad time’ for you to talk to family/friends on the phone. Feels that resources are wasted if given to children. Gets angry if you do favors for other people or give them things. Would rather throw something away … Read entire article »

Wireless Hot Spots

I admire modern people. They can go through their lives with what seems like an easy and electronic solution to everything. While I sit at Starbucks at the mall with packages, my bag, and my camera gear all around me, sipping on my Café Mocha, wondering if a waited important email has come through in my absense from my computer, I usually can see a modern person at the next table, neatly on a laptop or some other rediculously small gadget managing their affairs and lives with no hassle. This can replay itself at airports and many other areas. I always think, “I wouldn’t mind that option, but I wouldn’t even know how to start.” Even though I consider myself so far removed from being that “modern”, I do pay attention and … Read entire article »
