Caversham Wildlife Park (part 2)

Continuing with our day at Caversham…part one here

The most obvious difference between the wallaby and the kangaroo is size. As a rule, the kangaroo is generally much larger than the wallaby. The kangaroo has more height between its ankles and knees, which makes its legs seem out of proportion to its body. The kangaroo’s legs are built for speed on open terrain. The wallaby’s more compact legs are built for agility in forested areas. Although there are many different species of both wallabies and kangaroos that span a wide range of sizes, wallabies only tend to weigh between four pounds and 53 pounds (2 kg to 24 kg) and grow a mere 12 inches to 24 inches (30 cm to 104 cm) tall, not including their tails. Kangaroos, on the other hand, can grow to heights of 8 feet (2.1 meters) and weigh as much as 200 pounds. I still have trouble deciphering which is which.

The Quokka is found in Western Australia, mainly on Rottnest Island (near Perth). They also exist in small groups on the mainland in bushland surrounding Perth. They thrive in a warm climate, living among bushland in tall grass. They create their own trails and paths for feeding and escaping predators.
Quokkas resemble a small wallaby, with small rounded ears, and brown or greyish fur.

This Red-tailed Cockatoo grabbed our attention.

It’s hard to see birds behind a cage…

This one really wanted out, or so it seemed.

What do you think?

The Kangaroos entertained as always..

I sometimes think this is the main reason to go to Caversham, you can pet or feed the kangaroos.

A kangaroo with a little one nearby.

They make me laugh when I see them scratch themselves.

John took a movie of one moving. I just love to watch their movements.

More coming soon….
