Early Morning Visitor

Not completely sure I have identified this surprise early morning visitor to our backyard cherry tree this morning, but I think it is a red tailed hawk.

[Edit] I am thankful for all the emails and input I have received. Although there doesn’t seem to be a grand agreement, I do seem to have it narrowed down to a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk, or a juvenile Red-tailed hawk. Now, my dear sweet aussie, gumnut, who has never been to North America, has no clue to our raptors here, but, I will give him some credit as he does volunteer at his local zoo, is adamant that it is a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk.

Wonderful picture. And to think….I get excited when I get a Blue Jay stopping by!

Nice shot. Would have looked even better if there was a little more contrast between the bird and the background.

I sent your photo to my son-in-law in Maine. He is really into raptors. He said he’s pretty sure the hawk is a Broad Winged Hawk. I’m from bird-pixs. Great photo BTW

What a great shot! It is always exciting to just see a hawk. Juv. hawks can be very confusing. I am also leaning to the immature Coopers.
