Hurtling Toward Oblivion

As Al Gore and others try to stop us from doomsday or other less worse events, it seemed like a good idea to read Hurtling Toward Oblivion by Richard A. Swenson, M.D.

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I had this book on my Amazon Wish List and didn’t even know I possessed it until I went to write up my book list in a previous blog.

Just a few pages into the book, I already like it.

Some of my favorite quotes and passages already:

“My advice: go to college, start families, have children, build churches and invest in community. Don’t put the future on hold. Just get ready, stay ready, discern the times, live intentionally (not on autopilot), be humble, and always do what’s right. Prioritize according to the transcendent rather than the temporal.”

After WWII-with its fifty million dead and the debut of nuclear weaponry-scientists found they no longer required God’s judgement to end history. Humankind could get the job done without any help from above.

He also quotes Arthur C. Clarke: “This is the first age that’s paid much attention to the future, which is a little ironic since we might not have one.”
