In Your Own Backyard

Even though John and I like to go all around Western Australia and have our little adventures, sometimes we can be like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz:

…if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard.

Well there is more to that quote, but that suffices for this post.

Some days, our own front and back yard provides plenty of entertainment.

Like the day I was watering the plants and the white-tailed black cockatoos swooped into the neighborhood, flying all around, making their typical noises, and when it looked like they were going to settle here, I dropped the hose and ran to get my camera. There had to be fifty of them, I do believe the most I had ever seen at once in our neighborhood.

These are not small birds, so it was a little overwhelming to see.
They didn’t seem bothered I was taking their photos.
In fact, they were even kind of close for the lens I had on to get them all in the shot.
They like our banksias, they like our silver princess tree, but often they just want to land on the lamp post.
They are so cheeky, really.
Signal it’s time to leave. They did stay a nice, long while.
While I was out front, I took a moment to admire our Pimelia. Our social distancing bear was still hanging in there after a winter.
Another view of our happy, pink flowers.
My favorite color in the world in a form of a native wildflower we picked up at the Plant sale at Kings Park – Melaleuca fulgens, “Salmon Form”
It can also be very entertaining watching the birds from the kitchen window taking a bath.

There’s no place like home.
Which in my case feels like it includes a lot of territory.
