Philtrum

The Philtrum

I heard it said once, and soon forgot, and later wondered like crazy what it was called. philtrum

Just what IS that space called, that verticle groove between the nose and one’s upper lip? In spite of checking anatomy books and other places, I could never find it. Turns out, it’s called a philtrum!

This became the subject (provoked by me) at yesterday’s party. I don’t think Miranda, the graduate we were celebrating, minded the discussion.

Finally, today, thanks to a google search which led me to wikipedia, I found the philtrum!

Once when I was a little girl at camp, I talked with a counselor who did not have one of these. Her lip was just flat across, and I couldn’t stop looking at it. I must have looked like I was still thinking about something troubling, because she kept asking if there was anything else on my mind. I would say “no” although that was not quite true, but I knew I shouldn’t say “What’s up with you lip?!”
