Unique Wrestling Account

Delacroix’s Jacob Wrestling with the Angel

Last Sunday my son Enric preached about a unique wrestling account that has ever taken place. He was continuing his series in Genesis, and this account of course, was about Jacob, whose name was later changed to Israel.

Growing up in Sunday School, listening to the stories about Jacob, I never really thought of him as a rebel, but Enric specifically reminded us that Jacob strayed, and God brought him back, and God does the same with us. We are all rebels at heart, sinners.

Enric showed us some very important Bible truths:

“God’s way is the best way, our way is folly.”

“God didn’t save us so we just go our own way. We didn’t just say a prayer and get fire insurance.”

Jacob’s folly had consequences.

  1. He had to leave home
  2. He became a servant (to Laban)
  3. He was deceived in marrying Leah (once he was the deceiver).

During this time, God did bless Jacob, but there was also strife.

Jacob reached a turning point for God, instead of wrestling against God, he become one who strives with God, and that is what God changed Jacob’s name to, “Israel, which means, one who strives for God.”
