Busselton Jetty

The last visit that we made to Australia, we were hoping to see the Busselton Jetty. Sadly it was closed that time around. This visit though, it was now open and John and I were sure to put it on our list of things to do while in the Southwest.

Stretching 1.8 kilometres across Geographe Bay, Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. It is appreciated for its spectacular Underwater Observatory, Jetty Train and myriad of recreational uses. A unique experience situated in Western Australia’s favourite playground!

You can walk the jetty or take the train. At the end is an underwater observatory.

Descend 8 metres below the ocean’s surface to view an awe inspiring forest of vividly coloured corals, sponges, fish and invertebrates.

We opted to walk.

The view from near where we parked, of the jetty extending into the Ocean. You can’t see the whole thing.

John gets a picture of me before we start our walk in front of the Interpretive centre and gift shop.

Part of the way down at the underwater observatory. What surprised me was the force of the water. The guide assured me that this was an unusually windy day.

One of the fish I managed to capture.

For the return trip we chose to take the train. This might have not been the best choice as while seated, the very strong winds took the lens cap right off my camera.

There was no way to jump off the train to run after it. So, we had to re-walk the length of the jetty. John ran ahead of me to save me the entire walk, but missed finding the lens cap. 🙂

I managed to find it, and just waited for him to return to me at the half way point.

Resting my tired feet.

After our jetty/lens cap adventure, we found a place to eat fish and chips and then went back to Siesta Park.
