National Zoo with Alejandra and Synara (and Rubí too!)

Last year when Alejandra was here we did not go to the Washington D.C. Zoo, so this year it was the first big thing we did. It ended up being a good plan as Synara loves animals and Rubí let us know she didn’t have any  memory of going to the zoo. So off we went.

600 photos later, I have selected  a few to share.

Alejandra and Synara at the zoo.

It was a very hot and sunny day, so Miranda gets the children covered in sun block.

Silas starts out with double coverage, the roof of the stroller.

Miquel and Laura ready for a good day.

Rubí was most anxious to see the elephants, this one would have to do for now, as we were making our way up the hill in the heat.

Almost to the top of the hill, the heat had everyone ready to stop for a drink and a bit to eat, meanwhile I watched this Abyssinian Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus Abyssinicus) tip his food bowl over. Maybe he didn’t like the heat either.

After lunch, we made the Cheetah the first stop.

Rubí seemed very interested in such a big “kitty.”

Escape Artists, the Red Panda was a popular exhibit today as yesterday it had escaped!

The Giant Panda didn’t make an appearance outside, so we ventured in to find it.

Both girls were excited to see the Panda

Alejandra demonstrates to the children how to eat Cotton Candy! (Australians call it fairy floss).

After the ‘big kitty’ Rubi enjoyed meeting the “little horse.” The Przewalski’s Horse
(Equus ferus przewalskii)

Having a closer look.

She was real interested in the Acouchi when we got into the Small Mammal House

Jenny liked the Sand Cat.

A Geoffroy’s Tufted-eared Marmoset
(Callithrix geoffroyi) played Peek-a-boo with us.

My favorite photo of the animals from today, the Golden Lion Tamarin.

Too many animals to mention in the Small Mammal House, the girls enjoyed each exhibit.

We didn’t know this was going to happen, but the heat reached 41° C. What a thrill it was to find a spot to get wet.

I think this is the happiest I’ve seen this child all week! The water could pop up randomly at different places and every 5 minutes a rush of water would flow over their feet.

Silas was thrilled too!

While the children played in the water, Alejandra and Laura chat…

…Synara focuses her attention on…

…the California sea lions!

If the water place wasn’t enough thrills and giggles, going bumpety bump down the steps with Miquel was even more so!

Ok, so the heat was a factor. Loved to see Synara wave her fan, totally a señorita!

Every so many yards, there was a shower mist spraying water, Jenny enjoys it very much.

Everyone watches the tiger…

…strangely back into the water to cool itself.

A long hot day, and a long ride home!
